At a conference in New York, ITU secretary general Hamadoun Toure said that worldwide mobile phone subscribers are likely to reach the number of 4 billion. This is because more affordable contracts are presented and users have also a wide range of mobile phones from where to choose the best one.
Since 2000m the number of mobile subscribers has increased substantially. There is an annual growth of about 24 per cent between 2000 and 2008. Yet, in 2008 the percentage grew to over 50 and by the end of the same year it will probably reach about 61 per cent.
The growth is basically influenced by developments in some of the world’s largest markets, like Brazil, Russia, India and China. The later had over 600 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of July 2008 alone.
It seems that the mobile phone industry know nothing but to expand and with the new features that handset come with the number might excel 4 billion. In each developing country the number of subscribers rises mainly because of the affordable plans presented by mobile phone carriers.
